Categories Explained

We appreciate that firms who do not fit straight into a building or civil engineering category for Best Places to Work in Construction 2009 might need some guidance on which category they should enter, so this guide should help.

Who can enter the Specialist Contractor category?
This is open to companies of all sizes specialising in activities such as: demolition; plumbing, piling; scaffolding; ground works; cladding; curtain walling; steel, concrete or timber frame construction; roofing; brickwork, plaster and drywall; partitioning; painting & decorating; suspended ceilings; electrical; heating and ventilation; lift or escalator installation. If you are contractor providing a specialist service to the construction industry, this is the category for you.

What about the Professional Services category?
This award is open to consultancies such as architects, planners, engineers, surveyors, cost consultants and project managers – firms who are providing professional services or advice to clients and contractors in the construction industry.

Who qualifies as a Supplier?
This category is open to any firm which is supplying products and materials, plant or personnel to the construction industry. If you are a manufacturer, merchant, plant hire business, or recruitment consultancy, this is the category for you. 

Most Improved Performance Year-on-Year
We will also be presenting a Contract Journal Best Places to Work in Construction Award for the Most Improved Performance Year-on-Year. This Award will be given to a company that has made the biggest improvement in its staff satisfaction scores over the last year. Every company that entered the Contract Journal Best Places to Work in Construction Awards 2008 will be eligible for this Award, and there is no need to enter for this category.

What about introducing other categories?
If the number of entries warrants it, we may sub-divide some categories, or introduce others. However, this will only be done if there are enough entries to warrant this.
